Which Decking Board Is Better for Your Project?

Choosing between Ipe and Purpleheart is not simply a matter of selecting the harder wood. Both are dense, durable tropical hardwoods, but they offer different strengths, appearances, working characteristics, and best-use applications.

Ipe, also known as Brazilian Walnut, is widely recognised as a premium decking material. Purpleheart is especially valued for its distinctive colour and is commonly selected for furniture, slabs, flooring, accents, and custom fabrication.

So, which one is better?

The practical answer depends on your project, the environment, your preferred appearance, your installation method, and how much preparation you are willing to put into the work.

Ipe and Purpleheart at a Glance

The figures above are representative rather than absolute. Tropical hardwoods can vary by species, growing conditions, moisture content, and test method. For a specific project, the material’s actual moisture condition and grade are also important.

1. Density and Hardness

Hardness describes how well a species resists denting and wear. The Janka hardness test measures the force needed to embed a standard steel ball into the wood.

Ipe usually records a Janka hardness of approximately 3,500 lbf. That places it among the hardest commercially available hardwoods. Its high density gives it strong resistance to abrasion, impact, and heavy foot traffic.

Purpleheart is also a very hard wood, but its published Janka values vary more widely. Depending on the species and sample, figures may range from approximately 1,280 to 2,520 lbf. Even toward the lower end of that range, Purpleheart remains significantly harder than many commonly used domestic hardwoods.

What this means for your project

Choose Ipe when maximum dent resistance and long-term wear resistance are the main priorities.

Choose Purpleheart when you need a highly durable hardwood but place equal or greater importance on colour, grain, slab character, or design impact.

Purpleheart is not a soft substitute. It is a demanding, high-performance material in its own right. Ipe simply has the advantage when the project is exposed to continuous heavy traffic or severe exterior conditions.

2. Durability, Rot Resistance, and Weather Exposure

Both species have strong natural durability. Their density and natural extractives help them resist decay, insects, and general outdoor wear.

Ipe is particularly well known for use in exposed decks, boardwalks, exterior stairs, heavy-duty structures, and marine-related applications. Evergreen’s Brazilian Walnut species information identifies Ipe as exceptionally resistant to decay, termites, insects, and marine borers.

Purpleheart is also rated as very durable and performs well in exterior applications when it is properly detailed, installed, and maintained. It is resistant to decay and many insect attacks, although no timber should be treated as completely immune to every environmental threat. Marine exposure, standing water, poor ventilation, and incorrect installation can affect any species.

Good construction still matters

The most durable wood can still fail when water is trapped around joints, end grain is left exposed, or drainage is poor. For either species, reliable results depend on:

  • Correct spacing between boards
  • Proper substructure and ventilation
  • Suitable stainless-steel or approved fasteners
  • Pre-drilling where required
  • Sealing or protecting end grain
  • Regular cleaning
  • Moisture-aware installation practices

Hardness is valuable, but it does not replace good design and disciplined installation.

3. Colour and How Each Wood Ages

Appearance is one of the clearest differences between Ipe and Purpleheart.

Fresh Ipe typically ranges from olive-brown to dark chocolate brown. Some boards may show reddish, golden, or darker streaks, with grain ranging from straight to interlocked. Over time, uncoated Ipe naturally weathers under sunlight and rain. Its original brown colour gradually fades toward a silver-grey.

That grey colour does not necessarily mean the wood has lost its structural durability. It is primarily a surface colour change caused by ultraviolet exposure and weathering.

Purpleheart is selected for its striking natural colour. Freshly surfaced material can show violet, purple, plum, or purple-brown tones. With exposure to sunlight, the colour normally changes. It may become darker and browner, with less of the vivid purple remaining over time.

A UV-inhibiting finish can slow this transition, but it cannot permanently stop natural colour change. If your design depends on a bright purple tone, plan for regular care and understand that the final appearance will develop with age.

4. Workability and Installation

The same density that makes these woods durable also makes them more difficult to cut, drill, plane, and fasten.

Ipe is particularly demanding. It can quickly dull cutting edges and may contain silica that increases tool wear. Carbide tooling, sharp blades, accurate measurement, and pre-drilling are important for a clean installation. Ipe can also be difficult to glue because of its density and natural oils.

Purpleheart is somewhat less extreme than Ipe in hardness, but it is still not an easy wood for inexperienced fabrication. If it is worked with dull tools or excessive heat, it can produce a gummy resin that clogs tooling. Grain direction may also affect planing and create tear-out.

For both materials, professional preparation can improve efficiency and reduce waste. Evergreen’s custom-cut service includes made-to-order dimensions, planing, sanding, edge work, finishing options, and quality checks.

A note on safety

Dust from exotic hardwoods can irritate the skin, eyes, or respiratory system. Use suitable dust collection, eye protection, respiratory protection, and safe workshop practices. Contractors and fabricators should also follow the safety guidance associated with their tools and workplace.

5. Typical Uses

Ipe is usually the stronger decking choice

Ipe is a natural fit for:

  • Residential and commercial decking
  • Pool surrounds
  • Boardwalks
  • Exterior stairs
  • High-traffic outdoor areas
  • Heavy exterior structures
  • Boat building and marine-related components
  • Long-life architectural details

Its combination of hardness, weather resistance, and dimensional stability makes it a strong choice where the surface will receive repeated use.

Purpleheart is often chosen for design-led work

Purpleheart is commonly used for:

  • Furniture
  • Live-edge slabs
  • Flooring
  • Cabinetry
  • Decorative panels
  • Inlays and accent pieces
  • Turned objects
  • Specialty boat-building components
  • Custom architectural work

It can be used outdoors, but its colour behaviour and workability should be discussed before it is specified as a decking material. For a large deck, Ipe is generally the more predictable selection when maximum exterior performance is the priority.

6. Cost and Maintenance Expectations

Exact pricing depends on board dimensions, grade, availability, shipping, fabrication requirements, and current market conditions. In many markets, Ipe sits near the premium end of tropical hardwood pricing because of its performance and demand.

Purpleheart pricing can vary considerably. It may be competitive with other imported hardwoods in standard dimensions, while wide, thick, clear, or live-edge slabs can command a premium because they are less common and more difficult to source.

Maintenance for both species

Neither wood is maintenance-free.

If you are happy for the surface to weather naturally, you can generally allow the colour to fade after keeping the material clean and well-drained. If you want to preserve the original brown or purple tones, you will need a suitable UV-resistant oil or finish and a regular reapplication schedule.

Maintenance usually includes:

  1. Removing dirt, leaves, and organic growth.
  2. Inspecting fasteners, joints, and board movement.
  3. Cleaning before applying a new finish.
  4. Lightly sanding or preparing weathered surfaces when appropriate.
  5. Reapplying a compatible exterior product as recommended.

A finish protects appearance more than it creates durability. Both Ipe and Purpleheart are naturally durable even when allowed to weather.

7. CITES and Responsible Sourcing

Interest in timber origin and documentation is increasing. Ipe and Cumaru, also known as Tonka-Bean, were listed in CITES Appendix II at the genus level, with the listing taking effect on 25 November 2024. The listing covers relevant genera and specified wood products, including logs, sawn wood, veneer, plywood, and transformed wood.

You can review the official CITES notification for the relevant trade controls. Requirements can depend on the country of export, import, product form, and current regulations, so documentation should be confirmed for each shipment.

This does not mean that every piece of Ipe or Cumaru is unavailable. It does mean that responsible sourcing, traceability, and accurate paperwork matter more than ever.

Purpleheart is not currently listed in the CITES Appendices in the same way, but responsible sourcing remains important for all Amazonian timber. Evergreen is committed to responsibly harvested Amazonian timber and to providing customers with dependable, transparent material choices.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose Ipe if you need:

  • Maximum hardness and wear resistance
  • A premium decking or boardwalk material
  • Strong performance in exposed tropical conditions
  • A brown hardwood that can weather naturally
  • A durable option for exterior or marine-related work

Choose Purpleheart if you need:

  • A distinctive purple or purple-brown appearance
  • A durable hardwood for furniture or feature work
  • A live-edge slab or custom-fabricated piece
  • Strong performance with a more design-focused purpose
  • A material that can become a statement element in the finished project

There is no universal winner. Ipe is usually the more practical choice for demanding decking. Purpleheart is often the more expressive choice for furniture, slabs, and custom fabrication.
